10 Best Bug Like Cars

May 2011

May is the month of both the Indy 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix. So in this month of automobile enthusiasm, the folks at Brussell Exterminating Service have made a list of their 10 favorite bug like cars.

  1. The Best Bug Like Car is not a car at all. It is the Brussell Exterminating truck !
  2. Brussell Exterminating Truck

  3. VW Beetle. No more need be said.
  4. 1958 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite. Headlights often give a car an insect like appearance. The Bugeye is the prototypical bug eyed car. It was introduced on May 20, 1958, the day before the Monaco Grand Prix that year.
  5. AHBugeyeSpritebyDerrickRoweinPublicDomain (83K)

  6. Nissan Leaf. Nissan's latest car, the all electric Nissan Leaf has the most amazing bug eye headlights. With a name like Leaf and its eyes, we think of a Praying Mantis when we look at the Leaf.
  7. nissan leaf 0024 (166K)

  8. Fiat "Cinquecento" 500 from the 1960s. The expression "cute as a bug" comes to mind.
  9. Cinquecento original 0063 (131K)

  10. 2012 Fiat 500. Also cute, if a bit larger.
  11. 2011 DC Auto Show0059 (181K)

  12. Pat Clancy Special Indy 500 racer. This car qualified and raced in the 1948 and 1949 Indy 500. What makes this car insect like? Insects have six legs. This car had six connections with the ground. That is, it had six wheels, four in back and two in front. A very innovative design !
  13. 1976 Tyrell P34 - Like the Pat Clancy Special, this Formula One - Grand Prix - car has six wheels. Four in the front, two in the back.
  14. Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing. Gullwing or Moth wing? Either way, the car harkens to the iconic Mercedes 300SL of 1955-1957.
  15. mercedes sls (149K)

  16. Messerschmitt KR-175 Bubble Car. It is small with lots of bulges, like many bugs.

Top 10 Bug Movies

April 2011

Springtime is the season when our thoughts turn to new movies and bugs that emerge in the warmer weather. In particular, homeowners should beware of termites, ants, bedbugs and stink bugs. Brussell Exterminating (Call 301-434-5610) offers free home and office inspections for harmful bugs. Brussell also offers a list of our employees's 10 favorite bug movies.

  • When homeowners see wood that has bubbled, tunnels in the wood or ant like insects with wings, termites are likely.
  • Bed bugs have been a problem in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area for the last 10 years. If homeowners are itching for no apparent reason, bedbugs can be suspect. They hatch as white and turn to reddish brown, the size of a bean.
  • Some ants destroy wood. Others don't. Brussell can determine if you have good or bad ants.
  • Stink bugs are back this Spring. They look like little brown shields. And they stink when crushed.
  • Our top 10 bug movies are:

  1. Antz. Animated. 1998. Interestingly ants hunt termites because they are larger. In this movie, the ants are the hunted and termites the hunters. Also, real ants secrete acid to kill termites. But not in this movie.
  2. The Blob with Steve McQueen. 1958. We like Steve McQueen movies so we chose it. However, the Blob was not really a bug. It was just an awful sticky mess. Which reminds us of termite swarmers, ants and stink bugs.
  3. The Fly. 1986. Jeff Goldblum turns into a very sticky fly in this movie.
  4. A Bug's Life. 1998. Cute.
  5. Alien and Aliens. 1979 and 1986. Sigourney Weaver battles intergalactic bugs.
  6. Species. 1995. Pincers from giant alien insects pop through lovely human carrier. Yech. But you have to watch.
  7. Tremors. 1990 movie with giant creatures burrowing beneath the ground like giant termites.
  8. Them. 1954. Giant nuclear enhanced ants try to take over Los Angeles - and the world !
  9. Mothra vs. Godzilla. 1964. Atomic insect vs. reptile. Arguably, the best of the Godzilla series.
  10. Bee movie. 2007. Bees are funny. Jerry Seinfeld wrote this.
  11. Honorable mention. We also enjoy the bee in the Nasonex commercial. He's funny too. Antonio Banderas is the voice.
